Hey there, it's Joe Montemorano - pharmacist extraordinaire and owner of RxHealthyHabits. In this blog, I would like to share a message that's really important for all of us - finding ways to reduce stress and relax from our crazy busy lives. Trust me, as a chain retail pharmacist, I know a thing or two about managing stress. I'm sharing these 6 tips that helped me and I hope these strategies also serve you well.

Now, some of you might be thinking, "Why do I need to worry about stress? It's just a part of life." But let me tell you, stress is no joke. It can lead to all sorts of health problems, like high blood pressure, heart disease, and even mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Plus, it can make you feel like you're constantly on edge, which is no way to live.

So, without further ado, here are six methods I highly recommend(and use daily) for reducing stress and finding ways to relax:

1. Exercise. Move Your Body. Physical activity is not just good for your heart - it's good for your head too.

  • Physical activity releases endorphins that boost your mood and reduce stress hormones.

  • Regular exercise can improve sleep quality, which can help you feel more rested and energized.

  • Exercise can also improve your overall health and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, which can add to stress levels.

2. Get Outdoors/Take A Break. We're all guilty of being glued to our screens for hours on end. It's time to take a break, folks! Step outside and soak up some sun or just take a stroll around the block. A little fresh air can do wonders for your stress levels.

  • Being in nature can reduce cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress.

  • Sunlight triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that improves mood and reduces stress.

  • Spending time outdoors can provide a mental break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

3. Get a hobby/Find Your Passion: We all need something that excites us and takes our minds off work and other stressors. It may be creating content for a brand, reading a good book, or playing guitar. But maybe for you, it's cooking, painting, or playing with your dog. Whatever it is, find something that you enjoy and make time for it regularly.

  • Engaging in a hobby can provide a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

  • Hobbies can also provide an outlet for creativity and self-expression.

  • Having a hobby can reduce stress by giving you something to look forward to and enjoy outside of work.

4. Connect with People. Sometimes, all you need is a good conversation with a friend or loved one. Make time to connect with people who matter to you. Trust me, it can be incredibly helpful in reducing stress and managing difficult emotions.

  • Talking to someone you trust can help you process difficult emotions from stress.

  • Spending time with loved ones can provide a sense of belonging and connection.

  • Seeking support from a mental health professional can provide tools for managing stress and improving coping skills.

5. Breathe In, Breathe Out/Practice Mindfulness. Meditation is not just for monks, folks. Taking a few minutes out of your day to sit quietly and focus on your breath can be a great way to reduce stress and find some peace in your busy life. It's all about being mindful and present in the moment.

  • Mindfulness can reduce anxiety and depression by helping you focus on the present moment.

  • Mindfulness can also improve emotional regulation and increase self-awareness.

  • Incorporating mindfulness techniques into daily life can improve overall well-being and reduce stress levels.

6. Reward yourself/Treat yourself: Finally, don't forget to indulge in a little self-care every once in a while. Maybe it's a spa day, going to the gun range, or just indulging in your favorite snack, giving yourself permission to relax and enjoy some downtime can be incredibly beneficial for your mental health.

  • Self-care activities can provide a sense of relaxation and pleasure.

  • Taking a break and indulging in something you enjoy can reduce burnout and increase productivity.

  • Prioritizing self-care can improve overall health and well-being by reducing stress and increasing resilience.

So, there you have it - six methods for reducing stress and finding ways to relax from your crazy busy life. I know it's not easy to make time for yourself when you've got a million things on your plate. But trust me, taking care of yourself is essential for your well-being, and ultimately, it'll make you better equipped to handle all of life's challenges.

As a pharmacist, I can tell you that taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your health. So, go ahead and try out some of these methods for reducing stress and finding ways to relax. You'll be surprised at how much better you'll feel, and your health will thank you for it.
