What are some things a personal trainer should do for you? Here are some tips from personal trainer, Lory Smitka (on the right) so you know the right trainer when you see one:

Getting to know you. A trainer should give a proper assessment consisting of but not limited to; medical history, fitness history, the reason for starting a fitness plan, goals, usual diet, sleep hygiene, stress level, fitness tests, and body measurements.
Safety First. Focus on proper form, appropriate weight, repetitions, and sets based on the client's fitness level.
Check-In. Confirm the client listens to their body.
Professional. Your trainer should be an inspiration. They should walk the walk, but also talk the talk.

Here are some other tips on personal trainers to keep you in the know:
personal trainers should know when to push you and when to not, to be able to take you to your limit without going too far and knowing when to back off. Your trainer should give you suggestions, and critiques, about weights, form, capability, etc. Ask yourself, are they checking up on you and communicating with you to see your level of exertion or fatigue? Are they attentive to you? These are all very important for a trainer to do.

Additionally, being professional and having the proper certifications are key. Does your trainer for a college degree in exercise science or a current nationally accredited certification for personal training? Check if they are professional and honor your space and the workspace. When starting with a personal trainer you should get a PAR-Q or a pre-activity readiness questionnaire. You should click with your trainer. A trainer you like and get along with is a great way to tell if they are a good fit for you.
